Potentially Important High Point Races
In 2015, American Pharoah, who had previously won the Arkansas Derby at the Hot Springs track, broke a 37-year Triple Crown drought. The Arkansas Derby has, however, been much less successful since that time. No Kentucky Derby-starting Arkansas Derby champion has finished higher than 16th in the previous five years.
Although the Louisiana Derby has been a Derby qualifying race since 1894, just two winners—Grindstone in 1996 being the most recent—have managed to win the Kentucky Derby.
Since 2000, the Kentucky Derby has not been won by the victor of the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct in New York.
The Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway Park in Florence, Kentucky, is run on a synthetic track and is often the least important of the prep races with a lot of points, but Rich Strike unexpectedly turned a distant third-place result in 2022 at odds of 80-1 into Kentucky Derby mythology.
