Horse Racing World Loses a Great One
Horse Racing Industry Mourns the Loss of Esteemed Trainer Larry Demeritte at 75
The global horse racing community is mourning the loss of revered trainer Larry Demeritte, who passed away on Monday at the age of 75 following a long and courageous battle with cancer. A beloved figure in the sport, Demeritte’s influence extended far beyond the racetrack, leaving a legacy of mentorship, perseverance, and grace that touched the lives of countless individuals in and around the industry.
A native of Nassau, Bahamas, Demeritte began his racing career at a young age. He immigrated to the United States to pursue his dream, eventually building a nearly five-decade-long career. Known for his calm demeanor and deep understanding of horses, Demeritte earned the respect of peers, fans, and competitors.
Larry Demeritte Highlights
His most visible moment in the spotlight came during the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby in 2024, when he saddled West Saratoga. The colt, purchased for a modest sum, became a symbol of underdog triumph after securing a spot in America’s most prestigious race. As Demeritte walked his horse across the Churchill Downs paddock before the race, he uttered a simple yet profound statement: “I’ve finally made it.”
This decisive moment resonated with fans and racing professionals nationwide, encapsulating a lifetime of dedication and hard work. Though West Saratoga didn’t cross the finish line first, the story behind his journey and the joy it brought to Demeritte stood as a shining testament to the heart of the sport.
“Larry Demeritte was a respected horseman whose legacy will be remembered across our sport,” said President of Churchill Downs Racetrack Mike Anderson. “He left a lasting impression on our Churchill Downs family and will be deeply missed.”
Demeritte’s final victory came on January 1, 2025, when his filly Grace On Grace claimed the Gowell Stakes at Turfway Park. It was a fitting farewell for a man who never stopped believing in the horses under his care.
A Lifelong Mentor and Advocate for the Underdog
Beyond his accolades, Demeritte was revered for his mentorship. Throughout his career, he offered opportunities to young jockeys, exercise riders, grooms, and aspiring trainers, many of whom had successful careers.
Following news of his passing, tributes poured in on social media. Jockey Joe Bealmear reflected on their decades-long relationship, writing, “Rest in peace to a legend I had known since my first memories. I thank God for allowing me to know and win for such a great man.”
Steve Byk, host of “At the Races with Steve Byk,” emphasized the importance of Demeritte’s influence: “Larry Demeritte successfully plied a craft quietly for decades and was inspirational to those who got to know him. The limelight and adoration he received from West Saratoga’s Derby couldn’t have been more perfectly timed or deserved.”
Many remembered his radiant positivity and sense of humor. Kaitlin Free, racing analyst at Churchill Downs, recalled, “The world’s light is much dimmer following Larry’s passing. Unless you knew his private battle with cancer, you could never tell. He always had a smile on his face and kind words to spare.”
Trainer Sarah Hamilton described him as “always positive, would make you laugh whenever you spoke with him. He was always smiling with a twinkle in his eye.”
An Enduring Legacy in Horse Racing and Beyond
Demeritte’s journey from the Bahamas to the heart of American racing embodied the hopes of many who enter the sport with big dreams and limited resources. His story inspired fans, fellow professionals, and those outside the racing world.
“We’re all so glad and proud that Larry achieved his dream of being in the Kentucky Derby with West Saratoga,” said the Kentucky Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association. “It showed yet again that the little guy, with some luck and a lot of skill, can compete with stables with far greater numbers and bankroll.”
Geena Lucille, jockey, credited Demeritte as a foundational figure in her racing career. “I broke horses for him on his farm at 16, and he kept me safe when I came to breeze. He was an incredible horseman and a wonderfully humorous human being.”
Trainer Paul McEntee shared a touching memory of their time at the Derby. “Walking over with him last year for the Derby is something I’ll never forget. We laughed and joked this past spring at Keeneland. After our horses ran second and third in the same race, we agreed we had to keep proving people wrong.”
Jockey Amanda Poston wrote, “Larry was so kind and cared much about his horses and his people. He put me on a horse when I didn’t know anyone and needed a helping hand. He was a very bright light, and horse racing won’t feel the same without him.”
His compassion extended to everyday moments as well. Trainer Karyn Wittek recalled meeting Demeritte at Belterra: “My phone was dead and I needed a charger. He charged my phone, drove me up to the paddock for my race, and my horse won. We always joked he was my lucky charm.”
Demeritte also symbolized representation in a sport where people of color often face additional barriers. His presence on the national stage reminded the industry of the importance of diversity, opportunity, and inclusion.
In Remembrance
Larry Demeritte leaves behind his beloved wife, Inga, and an extended family of friends, colleagues, and mentees touched by his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering passion for the sport. As the tributes continue to flood in, one thing is sure: Larry Demeritte’s legacy will endure for generations.
He wasn’t just a horse trainer. He was a mentor, a friend, a symbol of hope, and a reminder that dreams do come true. His presence made the sport richer, kinder, and more inclusive.
Godspeed, Larry.
