How to Read NFL Odds

All odds at BUSR display in American format. Every number tells you exactly how much you win or how much you need to risk. Two types — positive and negative.

Positive Odds (+) — The Underdog

A positive number shows your profit on a $100 bet. The bigger the number, the less likely the outcome and the bigger the payout.

+160 — Bet $100, win $160 profit, return $260
+1000 — Bet $100, win $1,000 profit, return $1,100

Scales to any amount: bet $25 on +160, win $40 profit.

Negative Odds (-) — The Favorite

A negative number shows how much you must risk to win $100 profit. The bigger the negative, the heavier the favorite.

-192 — Bet $192, win $100 profit, return $292
-110 — Bet $110, win $100 profit, return $210

Scales to any amount: bet $55 on -110, win $50 profit.

The Vig — What the Book Takes: The standard price on NFL spreads and totals is -110 on both sides. That extra $10 per $100 is the sportsbook margin, called the vig or juice. To break even at -110 you need to win 52.4% of your bets. Win 55% consistently, and you are profitable. Finding -105 instead of -110 on the same side — line shopping — reduces your break-even to 51.2% and is one of the highest-value habits a bettor can build.

NFL Bankroll Management

The single biggest edge most bettors leave on the table is bet sizing. A flat-betting approach — the same percentage on every game — is the most proven long-term method for NFL betting across an 18-week season.

1% Conservative $500 bankroll = $5 per bet. Survives long losing streaks. Best for beginners building confidence in a new system.
2% Standard $500 bankroll = $10 per bet. The most common approach among experienced bettors. Balances growth with protection.
3% Aggressive $500 bankroll = $15 per bet. Only for high-confidence spots. Never go above 3% on a single game regardless of how strong the angle looks.
The Golden Rule of NFL Bankroll Management: Never chase losses. If you lose three bets in a row on a Sunday, do not increase your Monday Night Football bet to get it back. The math does not work — chasing doubles your exposure on a game you may have less information on. Flat betting protects the bankroll through the inevitable losing weeks that every bettor faces across an 18-week season.

How to Bet NFL Point Spreads

The point spread is the most popular NFL bet type and the one with the most consistent long-term value. Here is everything you need to know before placing your first spread bet.

How the Spread Works

The favorite is assigned a minus number (-3.5). They must win by more than that number for the spread bet to pay. The underdog gets a plus number (+3.5). They win the bet if they win outright or lose by fewer points than the spread. The half-point (.5) eliminates a push — a tie where your stake is returned.

How Lines Move

Spread lines open days before kickoff and move based on betting action. If 70% of bets are on the favorite, books shade the line to attract action on the underdog. A line that opened at -3 and moved to -1.5 signals sharp money on the underdog. Line movement is one of the most reliable indicators of where the value lies.

Key Numbers in NFL Spreads

3 and 7 are the most common margins of victory in the NFL — a field goal and a touchdown. Lines at -3 and -7 are the most heavily bet. A spread of -2.5 is more valuable to the favorite backer than -3 because it loses if the team wins by exactly 3. Always check where the line sits relative to these key numbers.

Home Field Advantage

Home field in the NFL is worth approximately 2.5 to 3 points in a spread. A team that is -3 at home would likely be a pick’em or slight underdog on a neutral field. Factor home field into every spread evaluation, especially for divisional games where both teams know each other well and crowd advantage matters most.

How to Bet NFL Totals

Totals betting — Over/Under on the combined score — is the second most popular NFL market and one where sharp bettors consistently find edges because the public systematically overvalues scoring.

1
Weather is the most underpriced factor in totals. Wind above 15 mph significantly reduces passing efficiency. A game with a 48 total set before a weather system arrives becomes a sharp Under when conditions deteriorate 24-48 hours before kickoff.
2
Public bettors overbet Overs. Books know this and shade totals slightly high to attract Under money. The Under hits slightly more often than the Over in the NFL historically, especially on games with heavy public interest.
3
Thursday Night Football totals are historically low-scoring. Short rest, limited practice time, and cold weather late in the season all suppress scoring. TNF Unders hit at a higher rate than any other day of the NFL week.
4
Check injury reports 24 hours before kickoff. A starting quarterback downgrade or an offensive line injury can swing a total by 3-4 points. Getting in before the line moves is the sharpest play in totals betting.
5
High totals (50+) are harder to hit than they look. Week 1’s highest total — Bengals vs Buccaneers at 50.5 — requires both teams to combine for 51 points. That sounds easy with two high-powered offenses, but it happens less than 50% of the time historically.

How to Bet NFL Player Props

NFL Player props are the fastest-growing NFL betting market and the one where the sharpest edges exist. Books set prop lines with less precision than game spreads, creating exploitable inefficiencies throughout the season.

Passing Yards Props

The most popular QB prop. Look at the implied team total — a team projected to score 28+ points needs their QB throwing efficiently. Target the Over on a QB whose team has a high implied total and is playing from behind game script. Check the NFL Odds page for live passing yards lines every week.

Receiving Yards Props

Target the No. 1 receiver on high-total teams. CeeDee Lamb, Justin Jefferson, and Ja’Marr Chase see 9-12 targets per game. Their receiving yards props are high-floor bets in games where their team is projected to score 27+. Target the Over when their team is a moderate underdog — negative game script forces more passing volume.

Rushing Yards Props

Game script drives rushing volume. A lead back on a team favored by 7+ is a strong Over candidate — winning teams run the ball late to drain the clock. Target Under on running backs whose team is a significant underdog, where passing volume replaces rushing in catch-up mode.

Touchdown Props

Anytime TD scorer props are high-variance but offer the best payouts. Target red zone targets — receivers who see 2+ red zone looks per game are the most consistent TD prop plays. Avoid goalline backs unless the team has a clear goal-line package — modern NFL offenses spread TD opportunities across multiple players.

How to Bet NFL Futures

NFL Futures are the most patient form of NFL betting — you lock in a price and wait up to six months to find out if you won. The discipline is in timing. Here is when to bet each futures market. See all current futures odds at the NFL Odds page.

Futures MarketBest Time to Bet2026 Value Play
Super Bowl WinnerBefore training camp (July). Odds are longest, and books have the least information. Second window: after a top team loses in Week 1.Packers +1800 and Broncos +1800 are the most underpriced teams before camp. Both numbers shorten once training camp confirms their offseason upgrades.
Conference WinnerBefore Week 1. Better value than Super Bowl odds and the same timing logic applies — buy before the market has real information.Ravens +500 to win AFC. Bills +500. Both are legitimate conference contenders at prices that reflect upside with less Super Bowl risk built in.
Division WinnerBefore Week 1 and again after Week 4-5 when the division standings start to take shape. Division prices shorten faster than any other futures market.Cowboys +216 to win NFC East is live if the Eagles (+125) stumble in their brutal early schedule. Buy the Cowboys before Week 3.
Win TotalsBefore training camp. Books set win totals in June with limited offseason information. Target teams whose totals have not yet reflected major offseason additions.Cowboys Over 9.5 wins at +111. The defense overhaul is real — Rashan Gary, Caleb Downs, and new DC Christian Parker. The offense ranked 2nd in 2025.
NFL MVPBefore Week 1 for the best odds. The MVP market tightens dramatically after Week 6 when a frontrunner emerges. Lamar Jackson at +350 is the chalk.Dak Prescott +1300 is live if the Cowboys reach 10+ wins. Patrick Mahomes +600 is the safest non-chalk play.

2026 NFL Season Betting Plan — Week by Week

How to approach the 2026 NFL season as a bettor from the opener on September 9 through Super Bowl LXI on February 14, 2027.

Weeks 1-4 — Gather Information

The first four weeks are the most overpriced in the NFL calendar. Books set lines based on offseason projections and public perception. Bet conservatively — 1% of bankroll per game. Use this stretch to identify which teams are better or worse than their preseason odds suggested. The best futures bets of the season come in Weeks 2-4.

Weeks 5-10 — Prime Betting Window

By Week 5 you have real data: ATS records, situational trends, injury patterns, and line movement tells. This is when the sharpest NFL bettors increase their action. Books are still setting lines with incomplete information. Standard 2% flat bet sizing.

Weeks 11-14 — Divisional Stretch

The schedule tightens with divisional rematches dominating the slate. Home divisional underdogs are at peak value — coaches have studied the film from the first matchup and crowd advantage is significant. Watch for teams eliminated from playoff contention — they often lay off motivation in a way the spread does not reflect.

Weeks 15-18 — Playoff Picture

The final four weeks are the most complex to bet. Teams clinching playoff spots may rest starters. Totals are your best play here — game script is easier to predict than outcomes when motivation is uneven. Under is the sharp side on any game where one team has already clinched and the other is eliminated.

Wild Card and Divisional Rounds

Playoff NFL is the most public-driven betting market of the year. Brand-name teams get flooded with money regardless of the spread. The sharp play is against heavy public favorites — teams covering 60%+ of betting tickets are almost always overpriced by 1-2 points. Home underdogs in the Wild Card round cover at a historically strong rate.

Conference Championships and Super Bowl

Super Bowl LXI at SoFi Stadium on February 14, 2027 is the highest-public game of the year. Books shade lines hard toward the public side. The Under is historically strong in Super Bowls — the biggest game of the year is often the most conservative, defensively focused game of the season.

2026 Pre-Season Sharp Angles: Three bets to place before training camp opens in July. First: Packers +1800 Super Bowl LXI — Micah Parsons transforms their defense and Jordan Love is a legitimate MVP candidate. Second: Cowboys Over 9.5 wins at +111 — the offense is elite, the defense was rebuilt, and +111 is positive money on a 10-win team. Third: Broncos +1800 Super Bowl LXI — Bo Nix year 2 with a full offseason, sharp money is moving this number already. All three shorten significantly once training camp opens.

NFL Betting Glossary

Key terms every NFL bettor needs to know before placing their first bet at BUSR.

TermDefinition
ATSAgainst the Spread. A team’s record when their margin of victory or defeat is compared to the point spread. A team can be 8-4 straight up but 4-8 ATS if they consistently win by less than the spread.
Vig / JuiceThe sportsbook’s commission built into the odds. The standard -110 price on spreads and totals means you pay $10 per $100 bet as the book’s margin. Lower vig (-105) is always better for the bettor.
PushA tie between your bet and the result. If the spread is -3 and the favorite wins by exactly 3, both sides push, and all stakes are returned. Half-points (.5) eliminate pushes.
Line MovementWhen the spread or total changes after opening. Movement against the public tide signals sharp money — professional bettors forcing the line to move.
SharpA professional or experienced bettor whose action moves lines. When sharp money hits one side, books adjust immediately. Tracking which side sharps are on is one of the most reliable betting indicators.
SquareRecreational or public bettor. Squares tend to bet favorites, Overs, and brand-name teams regardless of value. Books set lines to take advantage of square tendencies.
Implied ProbabilityThe percentage chance a bet needs to win to break even at the given odds. -110 requires 52.4% wins to break even. +200 requires 33.3%.
Steam MoveA sudden, coordinated line movement triggered by sharp groups betting the same side at multiple books simultaneously. One of the strongest signals in sports betting.
Reverse Line MovementWhen a line moves opposite to the betting percentages. If 70% of bets are on the favorite but the line moves toward the underdog, sharp money is on the dog.
Closing Line Value (CLV)Beating the closing line — getting a better number than where the game closes — is the gold standard of long-term betting success. CLV winners are profitable bettors long term.

NFL Betting Guide FAQ

How do I start betting on the NFL?

Sign up at BUSR.ag, deposit $50 or more using promo code 300SB1 to claim your 300% welcome bonus up to $3,000, navigate to the NFL section and pick your game. Choose your market — spread, moneyline, total or prop — enter your stake and confirm. Lines go live days before kickoff and update in real time.

What is the easiest NFL bet for beginners?

The point spread is the best starting point. Both sides are priced at -110. You pick a team to win by more than the spread or lose by less. The half-point eliminates a tie. Bet $110 to win $100. Once you are comfortable with spreads, totals are the natural next step — same pricing, no need to pick a winner.

How much should I bet on NFL games?

A flat-betting approach of 1-3% of your total bankroll per game is the most proven long-term method. On a $500 bankroll, that is $5-$15 per bet. This protects you through losing streaks and keeps you in action for the full 18-week regular season plus playoffs.

What is the best NFL bet type?

Point spreads and totals offer the most consistent value — both sides at -110, efficient market, manageable vig. Player props offer the most upside because lines are set less precisely and sharp angles are easier to find. Futures offer the biggest payouts but require patience. The best approach is spreads and totals as your base, props for upside, and 1-2 futures per season locked in before training camp.

What does -110 mean in NFL betting?

The -110 price means you must bet $110 to win $100 profit. It is the standard price on NFL point spreads and totals at BUSR. The extra $10 is the sportsbook margin, called the vig. To break even at -110, you need to win 52.4% of your bets. Win 55% consistently, and you are profitable long term.

When should I bet NFL futures?

The best time to bet NFL futures is before training camp opens in July, when odds are longest, and books have the least information. The second best time is after a top contender loses in Week 1 — the public overreacts, odds lengthen briefly, and sharp money floods in before the line corrects.

How do same-game parlays work?

A same-game parlay combines multiple bets from the same NFL game — spread, total, and player props — into one ticket. All legs must win. Available at BUSR for every NFL game. Example: Cowboys -3 + CeeDee Lamb Over 7.5 receptions + Dak Prescott Over 267.5 passing yards — all three from the same game, one ticket.
