2026 Kentucky Derby Leaderboard Update (April 7)

Defining the Field: Blue Grass, Wood Memorial, and Santa Anita Results
The road to the 152nd Kentucky Derby reached its penultimate destination this past weekend. While Commandment and Renegade established their dominance in late March, three more titans (and one massive longshot) punched their tickets to Louisville in the final 100-point prep races.
Further Ado’s Blue Grass Masterclass (Keeneland)
The “bubble” burst in spectacular fashion at Keeneland. Entering the race with just 35 points and needing a top-two finish to stay alive, Further Ado didn’t just win, he dominated. Under Irad Ortiz Jr., the Brad Cox trainee drew off to an 11-length victory, the largest margin in the Blue Grass Stakes in 20 years.
- – Leaderboard Impact: Further Ado vaults to #1 overall with 135 points, narrowly overtaking Commandment.
- – The Disappointment: Great White, the John Battaglia Memorial winner, set the early pace but faded to fifth, likely ending his Derby aspirations.
The “Big A” Farewell: Albus Upsets the Wood Memorial (Aqueduct)
In the final Wood Memorial to be held at Aqueduct before its move to Belmont Park next year, the racing gods delivered a cinematic ending. Albus, an 11-1 longshot trained by Riley Mott (son of Hall of Famer Bill Mott), surged late to secure a 1 1/4-length victory.
- – The Upset: Favored Iron Honor tired to seventh after a rough trip, leaving the door open for Albus to claim the 100 qualifying points.
- – The Bubble: Right to Party (38-1) finished a fast-closing second, securing 50 points and likely jumping into the Top 20 from obscurity.
Mike Smith Makes History at Santa Anita
The West Coast path was cleared by a veteran master. So Happy, a son of Runhappy, sat a perfect trip behind the leaders before kicking clear to win by 2 3/4 lengths. The victory gives 60-year-old jockey Mike Smith a legitimate chance to break Bill Shoemaker’s record as the oldest rider to win the Kentucky Derby.
- – The Favorite Falls: Bob Baffert’s Potente led into the stretch but couldn’t hold off the winner. However, his second-place finish adds 50 points to his total, keeping him safely in the Top 10.
- – Stats: So Happy clocked 1:49.01 for the 1 1/8 miles, earning a field-best 100 Beyer Speed Figure for the weekend.
The Final Chance: The Lexington Stakes (April 11)
While the major 100-point preps are over, one final opportunity remains at Keeneland this Saturday: the $400,000 Lexington Stakes (G3).
Offering points on a 20-10-6-4-2 scale in the 2026 Kentucky Derby leaderboard, the Lexington usually serves as a “last-gasp” qualifier. However, for 2026, the leaderboard is exceptionally top-heavy. With the current “cutoff” for the Top 20 projected at approximately 50-55 points, even a win in the Lexington (20 points) may not be enough for a horse with zero points to crack the field.
Entrants to Watch:
- – Enforced Agenda: Hasn’t raced since the Jerome Stakes in January. A win here would move him toward the bubble, but he’d likely need several defections to get into the starting gate on May 2.
- – Corona de Oro: Coming off a convincing maiden win, looking to use this as a springboard to the Preakness Stakes if the Derby points don’t materialize.
