The Derby’s lengthy history started in 1872 when Meriwether Lewis Clark, the grandson of William Clark– of the famous pair Lewis and Clark– traveled to Europe. While there, Clark attended the Epsom Derby in England.

Clark was motivated by his travels and experiences, as well as, upon his return, was figured out to produce a phenomenon steed auto racing occasion in the States. With the aid of his uncle John & Henry Churchill, that talented Clark the needed land to establish a racetrack, as well as by formally organizing a team of regional race fans to be called the Louisville Jockey Club, Clark and also his brand-new club increased funds to construct a long-term racetrack in Louisville, Kentucky. On May 17th, 1875.

A total of fifteen three-year-old Thoroughbred horses competed for one as well as a half miles before a supporting crowd of roughly 10,000 spectators. Aristides was the first winner of the Kentucky Derby.

The Race

The Kentucky Derby, presented by Woodford Reserve, is a top-ranking, Grade I stakes race for 3-year-old Thoroughbred horses. The race distance is one and one-quarter miles long, and it is run on the dirt racetrack at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. Colts and geldings in the race carry 126 pounds (57 kg), and fillies in the race carry 121 pounds (55 kg). 20 horses compete in the  Derby, which is a larger field size than most horse races; where on average 8 horses race against one another. The 20 horses racing in the Derby must initially follow the Road to the Kentucky Derby, which is a collection of 35 races happening at tracks across the country and the globe. Points are granted to the top 4 horses that complete each of those 35 races, and the 20 horses with the most points earn a place at the starting gate in the Derby race. The winning purse is $2.25 million.

Kentucky Derby Winners

The fastest time ever run in the Derby remained in 1973 at 1:59.4 minutes when Secretariat broke the track record set by Northern Dancer in 1964– a record time yet to be topped. Additionally, during that race, he did something special in Triple Crown races: for each successive quarter run, his times were faster. Although the races do not record times for non-winners, in 1973 Sham finished second, two and a half lengths behind Secretariat in the very same race. Using the thoroughbred racing convention of one length equaling one-fifth of a second to determine Sham’s time, he also finished in under 2 minutes. An additional sub-two-minute finish, only the third, was set in 2001 by Monarchos at 1:59.97, the first year the race used hundredths of seconds instead of fifths in timing.

Kentucky Derby 2024 Odds

There are few American sporting events with the history as well as popularity of the Kentucky Derby. Its rich traditions– sipping a mint julep, wearing a gorgeous hat, and joining fellow race enthusiasts in singing “My Old Kentucky Home”– transcend the Derby’s from just a sporting event, making it a celebration of southern culture and a true symbol of American.

The Derby is the longest-running sporting event in the USA, dating back to 1875.

The race is often referred to as “The Run for the Roses ®” and has continuously produced “the most thrilling two minutes in sports history“; undisturbed, even when coinciding with profound historic occasions like The Great Depression and World Wars I & II.
