Since its inception in 2017, the Pegasus World Cup has come to be known as one of the richest horse races in the world
Run on dirt over 9 furloughs, the Pegasus World Cup is open to thoroughbred racehorses aged four years old and up.
The inaugural race did not disappoint as Arrogate – the World’s Best Racehorse of 2016 – set a new track record (1:46.83) and took home the $12 million purse.
The prize money offering hit its peak in 2018, rising to $16 million. America’s Horse of the Year in 2017, Gun Runner, claimed the prize that year, edging out the closest competitor by 2.5 lengths.
In 2019, the purse of Pegasus World Cup dropped down to $9 million ($4 million to win) due to the creation of the Pegasus Turf World Cup. City of Light won comfortably that year, falling behind at the first turn before surging to victory on the final stretch.
At the 2020 edition of the race, newly eligible Mucho Gusto gave the Bob Baffert barn its second Pegasus winner (Arrogate was the first) and took home the $3 million purse.
At last year edition, dominant from gate to wire, Knicks Go under trainer Brad Cox and jockey Joel Rosario claim the 3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational.
Once again, $3 million is at stake. Who is going to win it in 2022 and add their name to the prestigious list of winners?
