How long is the Belmont Stakes Racetrack?
The Belmont is the longest of the three Triple Crown legs at a distance of 1.25 miles. The longer distance is what historically has put speed horses at a disadvantage, and is the main reason why the Belmont is also known as “The Test of the Champion.
This 1 1/2-mile (12-furlong) race was first raced in 1867 and is the longest of the three American Triple Crown racetracks. It is commonly regarded as one of the fairest racetracks in America, because of its sweeping bends and long homestretch.
How does a horse qualify for the Belmont Stakes?
A thoroughbred horse must be 3 years old to compete in the Belmont Stakes. The Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes champions are likely to be among the favorites in this third and final leg of the Triple Crown.
The top three finishers will be assured a spot in the race. Horses who want to compete must pay a fee and be nominated for the field. It’s also worth noting that not every horse competing in the 2026 Belmont Stakes will have run in both of the previous Triple Crown races.
