She will face off against her stablemate Bellezza, who was a Grade 3 winner at Belmont. Another contender to watch is Be Your Best, who finished a credible third in the Grade 1 Beverly D. Stakes. Sunday, August 31st: The Jockey Club Gold Cup, a Classic Showdown

 

The penultimate day of the meet features a blockbuster card with the Jockey Club Gold Cup (Grade 1). This $1 million race is a “Win and You’re In” for the Breeders’ Cup Classic and is run over 1 1/4 miles. The race is expected to be one of the most compelling of the year, with a field of top contenders.

The marquee matchup is the rematch between Mindframe and Sierra Leone. Mindframe, trained by Todd Pletcher, is coming off a dominant win in the Stephen Foster Stakes. He has a decisive turn of foot and the ability to close from off the pace. His main rival, Sierra Leone, the reigning 3-Year-Old Colt Champion, is a late-running machine that has been in scintillating form, most recently winning the Whitney Stakes. The field is not a two-horse race, however. White Abarrio, the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner, returns to Saratoga and is a formidable presence. Other contenders include Antiquarian, who has shown flashes of brilliance, and Phileas Fogg, a talented runner for trainer Gustavo Rodriguez.

Handicapping the Jockey Club Gold Cup will come down to a choice of pace. If the pace is hot, it will favor the closers like Sierra Leone and Mindframe. If the pace is moderate, it will open the door for a horse like White Abarrio to get a clean trip and make a run.
