2026 Kentucky Derby Leaderboard Update (March 30)

Shifting Sands: Commandment and Renegade Seize Control
The road to the 152nd Kentucky Derby underwent a seismic shift this past weekend. While the previous week was defined by the rise of Emerging Market and Fulleffort, the final Saturday of March belonged to two new titans: Commandment and Renegade. With 100-point hauls in the Florida Derby and Arkansas Derby, respectively, the leaderboard has been fundamentally restructured, leaving several former favorites fighting for survival.
Commandment Rules the South
At Gulfstream Park, Commandment established himself as the definitive Derby favorite with a gritty victory in the $1 million Florida Derby. Under a masterful ride from Flavien Prat, the Brad Cox trainee surged late to deny The Puma by a nose. This performance didn’t just earn him a spot in the starting gate; it catapulted him to the #1 spot on the leaderboard with 150 total points.
Renegade’s Arkansas Dominance
Oaklawn Park witnessed a display of raw power as Renegade swept from the back of the pack to take the $1.5 million Arkansas Derby by four widening lengths. Trained by Todd Pletcher, Renegade now sits at 125 points (#2 overall). His ability to handle the 1 1/8-mile distance with such ease suggests he will relish the 1 1/4-mile test at Churchill Downs.
International Wildcard: Wonder Dean
The UAE Derby provided the weekend’s biggest international story. Japan’s Wonder Dean secured 100 points and an automatic invitation to Louisville with a 2 1/2-length score in Dubai. His connections have confirmed they will travel to the U.S., adding a dangerous international dimension to the top of the standings.
The Road Ahead: “Triple Crown Saturday” (April 4)
The leaderboard is far from settled. Three final 100-point “Super Saturday” preps remain, and the results will determine the final composition of the 20-horse field.
1. The Blue Grass Stakes (Keeneland)
The biggest story entering Keeneland is the sudden absence of Paladin. Previously the market favorite, the unbeaten Chad Brown trainee has been declared out of the Derby due to injury. This leaves a vacuum at the top:
- Contender to Watch: Class President. Coming off a win in the Rebel Stakes, a top-three finish here would likely move him into the leaderboard’s top five.
- The Bubble: Further Ado (35 points) needs a win or a strong second-place finish to guarantee a spot in the gate.
2. The Wood Memorial (Aqueduct)
Chad Brown still holds a strong hand in New York with Iron Honor.
- Leaderboard Impact: Currently sitting on 50 points, a win would leapfrog Iron Honor over the likes of Silent Tactic and Emerging Market.
- The Longshot: Talk to Me Jimmy (20 points) must finish first or second to have any mathematical hope of qualifying.
3. The Santa Anita Derby (Santa Anita)
The West Coast path remains the most mysterious.
- The Heavyweight: Potente (50 points) is the horse to beat for Bob Baffert. A victory here would likely place him as the third or fourth choice in the overall Derby wagering pools.
- The Challenger: Intrepido (23 points) showed flashes of brilliance in the San Felipe Stakes and needs the 100 points from a win to safely clear the “bubble” threshold.
