The race attracts some of the country’s greatest three-year-olds. In August, many of the Triple Crown champions travel to Saratoga to try to add another major victory to their CV. On August 27, in New York, expect excitement, drama, and another piece of history in the making, regardless of the lineup.

Horses like Rich Strike, Mo Donegal, and Preakness winner Early Voting, are expected to run in the Travers Stakes on Saturday, August 26th at Saratoga.

Qualification and entry into the Travers Stakes

The Travers Stakes does not have a specific qualifying process, although the race’s goal is to have the best field possible each year. The race usually features the champions of the Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes, and Preakness Stakes. The race is only for three-year-olds. Colts will be able to carry 126 pounds, while geldings will be able to carry 121 pounds. The number of runners has fluctuated between nine and thirteen in the last ten years, ensuring a high-quality race. The Travers Stakes is ranked third in international rankings, behind the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes.

The Trophy

Tiffany & Co. designed the Travers Trophy, often known as the Man O’ War Cup. Mr. Riddle donated the trophy as a permanent honor for winning the race, and it was named after Samuel Riddle’s famous Champion. Every year, a member of the Riddle family presents the winner with a gold-plated duplicate.

The Travers Blanket

The victor of the Travers Stakes is usually presented with an opulent floral blanket, a gorgeous flower blanket to throw over the horse that is handcrafted locally with over a thousand carnations.

The Travers Canoe

Since 1961, the Travers Canoe has been a charming monument to the Travers champions each year. The canoe is painted in the colors of the current Travers winner’s silks. Since 1926, a canoe has been a staple in the infield pond, but it wasn’t until 1961 that the boat was officially linked with the Travers.

The Travers Festival

As part of a Travers Festival, the city of Saratoga Springs usually celebrates the whole week leading up to Travers Day along with numerous events, including live music.

The Travers Stakes Purse
