The nationwide picture

Which Party could Hold more Governorships?

A bet on a state governor names one race. The nationwide picture asks a different question: how many of the 50 governorships could each party hold after the midterms? The ratings map puts seven states in the toss-up column. It also shows why Georgia, Florida, Texas, Iowa, Kansas, Nevada and Ohio matter beyond any one candidate’s price.

Governor map ratings checked September 25, 2026. Ratings cover all 50 states; 36 hold governor elections. They are an editorial outlook, not results or BUSR odds. The prediction figures are an external market snapshot dated September 25, 2026. They are separately quoted contracts, can total over 100%, and are neither a poll nor a BUSR offer.

These are two separate signals: state ratings group the 50 governorships by outlook; the prediction snapshot quotes a market on which party finishes with more. Neither gives the winner of a particular race or confirms a BUSR market. Open the odds table for candidate prices, then check your BUSR account before betting.

Featured state races

The Three Governor Matchups Behind the Odds

The comparison above looks simple until you ask what is actually being priced. Pennsylvania is an incumbent reelection bid; Georgia and Wisconsin are open seats. Those differences make the contests more useful to understand than a single list of favorites.

Pennsylvania

Josh Shapiro (D) vs. Stacy Garrity (R)

Shapiro is seeking another term as governor. Garrity is Pennsylvania’s state treasurer and the Republican challenger. The reference snapshot has a large gap between their quoted prices, so this is a race to read as an incumbent defense, not a toss-up simply because Pennsylvania is a battleground in presidential elections.

Watch: Whether the challenger can change the shape of a race in which the incumbent entered the snapshot as the clear price favorite. Pennsylvania’s governor outcome is separate from its U.S. House races. See the full Pennsylvania governor odds.

Georgia

Keisha Lance Bottoms (D) vs. Rick Jackson (R)

Gov. Brian Kemp is term-limited. Bottoms, a former Atlanta mayor, and Jackson, a businessman, are competing for an open Republican-held governorship. Unlike Pennsylvania, no sitting governor appears on the ballot in this matchup. The reference prices sit much closer together.

Watch: Whether Georgia keeps the governorship in Republican hands or elects a Democrat. Georgia’s U.S. Senate contest is on the same statewide ballot, but a governor bet and a Senate bet are settled on different results. See the full Georgia governor odds.

Wisconsin

David Crowley (D) vs. Tom Tiffany (R)

Gov. Tony Evers is not seeking another term. Crowley, the Milwaukee County executive, and Tiffany, a U.S. representative, are competing for the open seat. A party can retain the governorship even when the incumbent retires, so an open race is not automatically a party flip.

Watch: Whether Democrats retain the office after Evers or Republicans take it. The quoted September snapshot favors Crowley, but that price does not decide the November vote. See the full Wisconsin governor odds.

A favorite is the shorter-priced candidate in a dated market snapshot. It is not a declared winner, a current BUSR line, or a guarantee of what voters will do.

Beyond the featured races

Other 2026 Governor Races to Watch

The expanded odds list covers the full state slate. These six matchups show why a rating can differ from a dated price and why incumbent defenses and open seats deserve separate attention. Their quoted prices, where available, appear in the table above.

Nevada · incumbent race

Aaron Ford (D) vs. Joe Lombardo (R)

Republican Gov. Lombardo seeks another term against Ford, Nevada’s attorney general. This is a direct test of an incumbent, unlike the open races in Georgia and Wisconsin.

Ohio · open seat

Amy Acton (D) vs. Vivek Ramaswamy (R)

Gov. Mike DeWine is term-limited. The two nominees are competing for a governorship currently held by a Republican, with no incumbent on the ballot.

Iowa · open seat

Rob Sand (D) vs. Zach Lahn (R)

Gov. Kim Reynolds is retiring. Sand and Lahn are competing for the office, making Iowa another open-seat race to follow rather than an incumbent reelection bid.

Arizona · incumbent race

Katie Hobbs (D) vs. Andy Biggs (R)

Democratic Gov. Hobbs is seeking a second term against Biggs. The relevant governor market, if offered, is about Arizona’s executive office, not its congressional delegation.

Michigan · open seat

Jocelyn Benson (D) vs. John James (R)

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is term-limited. Michigan will choose a new governor while also holding a separate U.S. Senate contest.

Florida · open seat

David Jolly (D) vs. Byron Donalds (R)

Gov. Ron DeSantis is term-limited. Jolly, a former U.S. representative, faces Donalds, a sitting U.S. representative, in the race to succeed him. It is a gubernatorial contest, separate from Florida’s Senate election.

State power on the ballot

What Changes When a State Elects a Governor?

Governors lead state executive branches. Their responsibilities commonly include proposing a budget, directing agencies, making appointments and signing or vetoing legislation, although the exact powers differ by state. That is why an open-seat race can change the direction of a state even when the party holding the U.S. Senate stays the same.

The 2026 governor elections will also show whether parties can defend the states they already hold. A Democratic win in Wisconsin would retain that governorship after Evers; a Democratic win in Georgia would change the party holding its statehouse. Neither outcome counts as a Senate seat; for the chamber itself, see our Senate control odds. Read a governor line for the named state and office, not as a shortcut to the national balance of power. For every race on the ballot, see all 2026 midterm election odds.

Quick answers

2026 Governor Election Odds FAQ

What are the 2026 governor election odds?

Governor election odds price an outcome in an individual state race, usually a candidate to win. The comparison above is a dated reference snapshot, not a live BUSR quote. Check your BUSR account for any eligible market and its current terms.

When are the 2026 governor elections?

The general election is scheduled for Tuesday, November 3, 2026. State voting deadlines and ballot procedures differ.

Which governor races are covered here?

The table lists all 36 states holding governor elections, with reference prices for 34. Pennsylvania, Georgia and Wisconsin receive deeper coverage; the watchlist highlights Nevada, Ohio, Iowa, Arizona, Michigan and Florida.

Who is running for governor of Pennsylvania in 2026?

The featured matchup is incumbent Josh Shapiro, a Democrat, against Republican Stacy Garrity. Check the state election authority for the full ballot.

Who is running for governor of Georgia in 2026?

The featured matchup is Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms against Republican Rick Jackson. Georgia is an open-seat contest because Gov. Brian Kemp cannot seek another consecutive term.

Who is running for governor of Wisconsin in 2026?

The featured matchup is Democrat David Crowley against Republican Tom Tiffany. The state election authority provides the full ballot.

Which 2026 governor races are toss-ups?

In the September 25 ratings snapshot, Texas, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Nevada, and Ohio are in the toss-up column. A toss-up is an editorial rating, not a tied vote count or a live betting price.

Which party could hold more governorships after the midterms?

The dated map rates 24 states Democratic, 19 Republican, and seven as toss-ups. Those are ratings across all 50 states, not election results. A separate prediction snapshot favors Democrats, but its percentages are independently quoted and do not represent BUSR odds.

Is a governor race the same as a Senate control market?

No. A governor race selects the executive leader of one state. A Senate control market concerns which party controls the U.S. Senate under its posted rules. They are separate outcomes.

How do I read governor odds in American format?

At +150, a winning $100 stake returns $150 profit plus the stake. At -150, a $150 stake wins $100 profit plus the stake. These are examples, not current prices.

Does the favorite in the odds table have to win?

No. Shorter odds indicate a lower payout at that quoted price, not a guaranteed result. Prices can change and the election determines the winner.

Can I use the payout calculator for a governor race?

Yes, as an illustration of how American odds convert a stake into potential profit and total return. The calculator does not place a bet or confirm a live BUSR price.

Why are some governor odds not yet available?

The dated reference snapshot does not show a governor winner price for Idaho or Rhode Island. Both races appear in the full list as not yet available. This does not establish whether BUSR offers those markets; check your account for availability and terms.

What should I check before betting on a governor race?

Confirm the candidate and state, the exact outcome covered, the current BUSR price, market availability, and the posted settlement rules before placing a wager.
