Each summer, fans pack the grandstands for Del Mar’s premier meet from mid-July through early September, followed by an additional fall session in November.

A Glimpse Into History

Del Mar first opened its gates on July 3, 1937, co-founded by Bing Crosby and fellow Hollywood legends Pat O’Brien and Oliver Hardy. Crosby himself welcomed the first fans through the gates and helped create the famous slogan, “Where the Turf Meets the Surf.”

Over the decades, Del Mar has become a symbol of elegance and excitement—hosting elite races such as the Pacific Classic, launched in 1991, and even the Breeders’ Cup in 2017. Its mix of glamour, sport, and seaside charm keeps it a favorite among racing enthusiasts.

Location and Atmosphere

Del Mar Racetrack is part of the Del Mar Fairgrounds, about 20 miles north of downtown San Diego. The setting is pure California—ocean breeze, palm trees, and sunsets that light up the Pacific. It’s horse racing with a view that no other track can match.
