Breeders’ Cup Sprint Historical Records
Trainer Bob Baffert has won the Breeders’ Cup Sprint a record five times, including in 2016 with Drefong, while jockey Corey Nakatani has won it a record four times.
Masochistic, the race favorite and runner-up in 2016, was disqualified more than a month after the event as a result of two tests that found stanozolol in the horse’s system. The associated $255,000 place prize was also forfeited by the horse’s connections and trainer.
A winning speed of less than 1:08.00 was accomplished by five horses, with Midnight Lute, trained by Bob Baffert, recording the fastest time in 2008. (1:07.08).
The late jockey Garrett Gomez rode Midnight Lute to victories in the BC Sprint on both occasions. Roy H, who triumphed in the race back-to-back in 2017 and 2018, and Midnight Lute both hold the record for most titles.
Four further champions have achieved marks that surpass 1:08.00. Kona Gold from 2000, Artax from 1999, Cajun Beat from 2003, and Trinniberg from 2012 are a few examples.
With five wins in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, hall of fame trainer Bob Baffert has established himself as a force.
Before taking home the aforementioned back-to-back victories with Midnight Lute in 2007 and 2008, he first entered the winner’s circle in 1992 with Thirty Slews. Since then, he has won with Drefong in 2016, and most recently with Secret Circle in 2013.
Breeders’ Cup Sprint 2023 Odds
Despite finishing second as the odds-on favorite in the Forego (G1) at Saratoga, Jackie’s Warrior was still the favorite to win the six-furlong version of this race. When the Sprint race began, Cody’s Wish, the winner of that race, was the 7-2 third choice.
